I work in a busy family practice that sees alot of children. In any given day, we can see upwards to one hundred and fifty children. I am in charge of entering their insurance and making sure their address and phone number hasn’t changed. I can tell you that during cold and flu season, it can get pretty busy. I like the fast pace and the variety of never knowing what to expect. We get children who have stuck things up their nose, swallowed any number of strange things, children who have stuck things in their ears. It is never boring. People always want to know what it is like to work for a doctor. Well, let me tell you, it can be interesting. I work for two family practice doctors, one internal medicine, and one CRNP. Each one has a different personality. While the internal medicine doctor has a very slow pace, the family practice doctors tend to have a very fast pace. The CRNP is somewhere in the middle. She likes to give her own shots and spend a lot of time with each patient. She is a wonderful person to work for. She really cares about each patient she sees. The internal medicine doctor also spends a lot of time with each patient. His patients require a lot of time because they tend to have more complicated problems. He sees a lot of heart patients and patients that have multiple medical problems. Most of his patients have to be reffered out to other doctors. The two family practice doctors see alot of children along with adults. They have to do a alot of vaccines and physicals for school. They move at a very fast pace. They demand alot from their staff. You must be fast and accurate. There is little room for error. All shots must be logged and notated in the chart. They must be kept a a certain tempature at all times. These have to be checked several times a day. Although these doctors tend to get them in and out in a hurry, there still has to be accurate records kept. Working in this enviorment is not easy for some people. You must have thick skin, because the doctors tend to get upset if patients have to wait. I really enjoy the challenge. Don’t expect to learn these skills in college. These are skills that only come with experience. No matter how much you read about something, until you actually do it you are not going to know the correct way. A good, fast and well qualified medical assistant is a very rare find. If you are looking for a challenging, fast paced carreer, then prehaps working in a family practice medical office is for you. Be prepared for long hours, but at the end of the day, its worth it!
